Hearing Aids & Glasses, Any Problems?

By David Bryce on 25th May 2016

Do hearing aids cause problems when wearing glasses?

We often get asked this question by people who are deciding on the style of hearing aids they are going to buy. The simple answer is no, not really. The question is usually asked when people have been reccommended or are considering BTE (Behind The Ear) hearing aids. They think that because the are on the ear they might be interfered with by the frames of their glasses. Generally they aren't and it causes no issues.

Enough room

There is plenty of room above and behind your ear for both to sit. The frame of your glasses will not interfere with the working of the hearing aids in any way, so there should be no problems. Sometimes customers mention that they can hear the scrape of their glasses off the case of their hearing aids. They don't think much of it though and they don't really complain. However if you are worried or you think it might be tight, there are other options for you.

The In The Ear Option

If your hearing loss is suitable you can wear ITE or In The Ear hearing aids, custom made to fit into your ears, they won't get in the way. Reliability of these type of hearing aids has increased but, they are not nearly as reliable as BTEs.

Glasses With Hearing Aids in Them

There is even glass frames with hearing aids in them, with the help of an Optician they can have prescription lenses fitted into them. Solves every issue really, but there are drawbacks. If the hearing aids need a repair, you are without your glasses. If your glasses need reglazing, you are without your hearing aids. It is something that you really need to think about before making a decision.
