Widex Unique Range

The latest range of hearing aids from Widex, the Unique line has proved exceptionally popular. Even long term Widex hearing aid users are impressed with the advancement in better hearing that the Unique range brings.

A Full Range of Styles

The Unique family offers a full line of hearing aid styles including custom In-The-Ear hearing aids, Receiver in Canal hearing aids and traditional Behind-The-Ear aids. However, it seems the two styles of hearing aids that are most popular are the two Receiver in Canal hearing aids,  the Fusion and Passion models. There are distinct differences between the models and they offer differing choices. We thought we would explain them in order that you can make an informed decision if you are deciding between them.

Widex

Unique Fusion

Widex Unique FusionThe Widex Fusion hearing aid style is a discreet device that comes with a size 312 battery, has a push button and can be fit with several different power levels of receivers, it also has a telecoil. This makes it a really versatile option for people with hearing loss, but let's break down what that all means. The size 312 battery offers between 135 to 150 hours of use, which is 30 to 50% longer than the battery in the Passion. Although the Fusion is an automatic hearing aid, the push button user control allows manual control of the programmes, it also allows a user to engage the Phone+ feature which allows a user to hear a phone call in both ears or the Zen+ feature which is an advanced sound therapy feature for people with tinnitus.

The Fusion can be fitted with four different receivers with differing levels of power output. It means that the device is hugely versatile and can fit even the most severe hearing loss. All in all it all adds up to a lot of benefit delivered by the hearing aid itself. The inclusion of a telecoil delivers wide use connectivity, not only will the Fusion connect to wireless accessories from Widex but it will also connect to any active loop system that is available, for instance in a cinema, church or public building.

Unique Passion

Widex Unique PassionThe Unique Passion is a much smaller hearing aid than the Fusion is, in fact it was the smallest RIC device available for years and actually may still be. However, that small size comes with sacrifices, fo instance, the Passion uses a size 10 battery. The size 10 delivers between 90 and 95 hours use which is considerably less than the 312 in the Fusion. The Passion has no user controls onboard so if you want to change programmes you will need an accessory.

That might not be a big deal, the Unique is an automatic hearing aid platform, but many users like the flexibility of differing personal programmes. The Passion can be fitted with a choice of two receivers which really will only cater for moderate hearing losses, so again, it is not for everyone. There is also no telecoil on the Passion which precludes using loops, Widex have considered this though and offer a Telecoil function on their M-DEX accessory. The only real reason for picking the Passion over the Fusion is simplicity and discretion.

Widex

M-DEX

M-DEXWe mentioned it so we will talk about it, the M-DEX accessory is a useful multi use device, it can connect via bluetooth or cable to many audio devices including phones and stream the audio to your Widex hearing aids. When used with your phone, the device in fact almost takes the place of your phone. It is also an in-depth remote control which allows you change programmes and control volume. As we said, it also has a Telecoil on board which will connect to a loop and allow you stream the audio to your hearing aids.

In finishing, apart from the differences we have discussed, once the devices are from the same technology level, the features will be identical. We think the decision process needs to be based on what you want, if you want functionality, power and control over your hearing aids, the Fusion is probably the choice for you. However, if you want discretion and simplicity, the Passion is the better option, if of course it is powerful enough for your hearing loss.
